ORAL HEALTH
Research tells us that a significant number of children under 5 years experience poor dental health. This is especially the case for rural areas. This results in cavities, various mouth diseases and nutritional deficiencies.
The Health Promotion team manages the “Smiles 4 Miles” program for the region. This project aims to prevent poor oral health by improving prevention strategies, identification, referral and access to services. It involves working with early childhood and education staff to improve their skills and taking a whole of school approach to improving prevention.
PREVENTING OBESITY
Australia is experiencing an alarming increase in childhood obesity. This results in all kinds of social, emotional and physical problems both in childhood and later in life. Evidence tells us the best prevention strategies include increasing physical activity, improving nutrition and strengthening self esteem.
The Children's Healthy Activities and Mentoring Program for Schools (CHAMPS) has been updated and is being piloted in Baranduda and Barnawartha Primary Schools as an e-learning program.
