The following information is provided to assist you in preparing for your placement at Gateway Community Health.
If you have any further queries after reading this please contact our Clinical Placement Manager, Dr Alana Hulme Chambers on (02) 6022 8888.
Police and/or Working with Children Checks: Please ensure that you have these checks completed and that you bring them with you on your first day, if you haven’t already provided them to Gateway Community Health.
Uniform/clothing: Gateway Community Health and staff recognise that appropriate clothing presents a professional image to clients and other agencies. Please present in clothing that is in good repair, clean and to a standard that is acceptable to both management and clients of Gateway Community Health. If you are unsure about what to wear please contact the Clinical Placement Manager on (02) 6022 8888.
Depending on your placement, your supervisor may advise that you bring specific clothing items such as bathers, old clothes, work boots or jeans. If so, it is advisable that you bring these items to Gateway Community Health separately rather than wearing them to the office.
Amenities available: A large kitchen is available, equipped with microwaves and fridges should you choose to bring your lunch. Tea, coffee, milk and filtered water are provided by Gateway Community Health.
Hours of work: Most student placements operate between the hours of 9am – 5pm. Please talk with your supervisor if you have any issues regarding this.
Your First Day of Placement
Parking: Free all day parking is available behind Gateway Community Health in the "Heath Car Park" which is best entered from Hume St.
Please note that this car park fills quickly and you may not be able to secure a place by 9am. In this instance we suggest all day parking located on the corner of Elgin Boulevard and High St, or further along Hume St (see Google Maps).
Arrival: Please arrive to the reception desk at Gateway Community Health, 155 High St, Wodonga, at 9am and ask for the Clinical Placement Manager, Dr Alana Hulme Chambers.
Schedule: On your first day you will receive an introduction to Gateway Community Health.
This will comprise of:
- An induction for your computing and telephone equipment
- A Building & Occupational Health and Safety induction, including being issued with a security swipe card to be able to enter and leave the building. Note: this card will only work between the hours of 9am – 5pm.
- Introduction to staff and other teams at Gateway Community Health
A full agency orientation is held once a month and if it occurs during your placement you will be asked to attend this session, as it will provide you with a thorough overview of the agency, including the functions and operations.
After completing these pre-requisites, you will commence your placement with your assigned team.
Your first day will be busy and you are not expected to remember everything you are told. You will have access to an orientation manual containing key information about Gateway Community Health throughout your placement and you can refer back to this at any time, as well as having the Clinical Placement Manager and your supervisor for any questions you may have.
